In the rear portion of the upper jaw, the maxillary sinus cavity lies just beyond the jawbone. Often, this cavity is so large that there is insufficient bone to securely place dental implants. When this occurs, a sinus graft may be recommended.

Similar to bone grafting, a sinus graft involves the surgical application of donor tissue to augment the existing bone structure. Depending on individual needs, this procedure may be performed at the time of implant placement or done in advance, allowing it to fully heal before placing the implants.
